توقع محمد خميس المهيري المدير العام للمجلس الوطني للسياحة والآثار ارتفاع عدد السائحين القادمين للدولة إلى 12 مليون سائح في 2012، بنمو 9% مقارنة بالعام الماضي، الذي استقبلت الدولة خلاله 11 مليون سائح.

وقال المهيري في تصريحات صحافية أمس على هامش معرض «الخليج لسياحة الحوافز والأعمال والمؤتمرات» ان قطاع السياحة والفنادق بالدولة يوفر نحو 170 ألف وظيفة، في حين تبلغ مساهمته في الناتج المحلي الإجمالي نحو 7%. وتشكل سياحة المؤتمرات والمعارض بين 20 ـ 30% من اجمالي قطاع السياحة بالدولة. read more...
The UAE is the world’s 31st popular tourism destination and the most popular in the Arab World, ahead of Egypt — ranked 32nd and Saudi Arabia ranked 35 — in terms of tourism receipts, United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) data shows. Abseiling down an abandoned village

For five years I have been wondering whether it could be possible to abseil at this gigantic drop. The reason behind it was to find another easier way to reach the abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis in Jabal Shams. Patrick and Nathalie, my beloved masters, opened a route in 2002 but it was logistically complicated as you have to do the drop in two sections with a belay (attaching a rope to a rock) in the middle, compared to Majaneen drop which is a single free drop. read more...
Master plan for tourism port

In implementation of the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to convert Port Sultan Qaboos as a tourism port, approval for the master plan to develop the port as a tourism hub was announced here yesterday by Transport and Communications Minister Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi. The minister also announced the establishment of a specialised company that will act as a developer for the project. The master plan includes retaining a commercial terminal that will be dedicated for export and import services related to certain goods and emergencies. read more...

The sultanate's Ministry of Tourism, Orascom Hotels and Developments and Rotana, the leading hotel management company in the Middle East and Africa, have announced that the new five-star Rotana Resort will soon join the growing list of premium hospitality destinations in Salalah. After being a member of the public-speaking organisation Toastmasters for just a year, an Omani man has been named the district champion in a contest in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Shakir Al Ansari, a 29-year-old electronics and communications engineer, won the Omani championship in the category 'Evaluation Speeches', in which participants have to make a speech critiquing another speaker. Shakir became the district champion last weekend, beating contestants from Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Jordan. read more...
In order to preserve Omani fashion for future generations and showcase its collection for everyone to see, the Center for Omani Dress (COD) will soon open a museum. Julia Al Zadjali, director of the COD, is passionate about preserving Omani clothes so that future generations will know what their ancestors wore. MoU on technical education signed

The Ministry of Manpower, represented by the Higher College of Technology, signed at Grand Hayatt Muscat Hotel yesterday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Singapore in technical education. Dr Muna bint Salim al Jardaniyah, Under-Secretary of the Manpower Ministry for Technical Education and Vocational Training, signed the MoU on behalf of the Sultanate, while Teng Theng Dar accredited and non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to the Sultanate signed for his country. read more...

This is the essence of Oman Journalism Week (May 19-21), which got under way here yesterday under the auspices of Abdul Aziz bin Mohammad al Rawas, Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan for Cultural Affairs.
