General Information regarding Oman
Sultanate of Oman , the ' Jewel of Arabia ' is located in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by the Saudi Arabia to the west, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the northwest, , and Yemen to the southwest.The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast.
Oman has an ancient and glorius history dating back to many centuries. Oman's unique geographical position and its closeness to international trade routes has ensured that Oman has always been one of the most prosperous & influential countries in the region throughout its history. Since the first century CE, Seafaring became a part of Oman's unique cultural traditions.
Oman has a long list of eminent rulers, amongst them the most important was Sayyid Said bin Sultan, under whose rule Omani empire reached its zenith of power. He extended Oman's control to Zanzibar, Mombassa in Africa to parts of Persia and India.
The Present ruler of Oman is His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who took over the control in 1971. Under his able leadership, Sultanate of Oman has re-acquired its place amongst the prosperous nations of the World. In November 2010, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) listed Oman as the most-improved nation over the last 40 years from among 135 countries worldwide.
